Giving Up Sugary Snacks
The hardest part about changing to a Healthy Diet is giving up the sweet treats we love. Believe me, I know. As I watch my husband, who never gains a pound (damn him) eat whatever he wants. By whatever he wants, I’m talking cookies. It is hard!
What I learned is that you can still have sweet treats minus the refined sugar. Refined sugar turns to fat. While we think this is giving us an energy boost, it isn’t. What happens is the crash is twice as hard.
By eating snacks that are lower in sugar and include natural sugar, such as what you get from fruit, you are giving your body a sustainable energy source and many times burning fat at the same time. In addition to this good news is these foods are easier to digest.
Here are a few DIY snack recipes to try:
Maybe you’re saying “Ricotta as a dessert?” The answer is yes. Ricotta is naturally sweet
. If you buy the part-skim variety, this is a snack that is less than 200 calorie.
4oz Part-Skim Ricotta
One Teaspoon Of Lemon
Half A Teaspoon Of Cinnamon
Dash Of Raw Honey
Handful Of Chopped Pecans
The great thing about this treat is there are so many variations of flavor and fruit choices.
I’m sure you have read conflicting opinions of whether you should be eating yogurt
. It is true that yogurt, especially the flavored varieties have sugar. I always buy plain Greek Yogurt and add my own flavorings to it.
Yogurt has Probiotic qualities that you need for healthy- gut. There are so many options to create your own dessert that I thought adding a recipe seemed pointless. Here are my favorite add-ins
- Raw Honey
- Dark Chocolate
DIY Trail Mix
I love Trail Mix and it is so easy to make yourself. By making it yourself you control the sugar and salt. Here are the typical ingredients you would find:
- Dried Fruit
Spicy Trail Mix
Pecans and Walnuts
Dried Tropical Fruit
Rice Crackers Crumbled
Chili or Cayenne Pepper To Taste
A Dash Of Brown Sugar
Another great snack idea that isn’t sweet but still delicious is Kale Chips. I am sure you have seen them in the store and geez are they expensive. Kale for most people is an acquired taste, but to be honest, it tastes so amazing baked and crispy.
DIY Kale Chips
This healthy snack is super easy to make. You just drizzle Olive Oil and add spices of your choosing. I like Italian seasoning but there are so many choices available to you. Drizzle some Chile Sauce on them if you like it spicy. Bake or broil for 15-20 minutes.
Eating healthy doesn’t mean you give up snacks. It is more about making better choices. Eat more fruit to get your sugar fix. Natural sugar doesn’t affect your body the same way junk like candy and soda does.
The reason fat grows is our body’s way of protecting itself against things that it isn’t supposed to have. Even foods you think are good like Granola and Protein Bars have chemicals, salt, and a lot of sugar.
