So, do you think it’s time you got your act together and start out on a new fitness journey to better fitness and health? If so, this is where it starts. This blog post is packed full of highly useful information and tips that all newbies can use as they start to work on their fitness…. Good luck!
Work On Your Portion Control
Before we take a look at the best workouts and exercises that can get you into better shape, we need to make sure that your body is getting all the correct fuel it needs to power through gym sessions! But as well as ensuring you eat all the right foods, you need to watch your portions.
After all, there is no point in eating a healthy fish dish if you are eating enough for two! You will easily be overeating if you serve yourself huge portions. So, it’s important that you try and cut back a bit. One of the best ways to do this is to buy some smaller plates. As long as you don’t pile your food up high on the plate, you will find that you start to eat much less at each meal.
Eventually, your body will get used to these smaller portions. Remember that, no matter how big your portion is, half of your plate should be filled with fresh veggies. Then you should split the other half equally between carbs and protein.
Start Off Slow
If you have never worked out before, or it has been a few years since you last went to the gym, you need to start your new fitness routine off very slowly. There is no point launching into a tough gym class as there will be no way you will be able to keep up.
In fact, you might be better off working out on your own at home first before you do sign up for a gym. Even if you just start walking more every day, this can help improve your fitness, so you are in better shape for the gym. Once you do start to think about joining a gym, it’s a good idea to get a free trial membership first for a couple of different ones.
That way, you can be sure that you like the one you are joining. Plus, it gives you a chance to try out a few different gym classes. Find out which ones are best suited for beginners, as these will be easier for you to manage. If you try some that are too hard, it could ruin your motivation, and you might bottle it!
Remember Strength Training
When we start out training, most of us simply stick to cardio workouts. These are ones that get you hot and sweaty and help you burn all those calories. You know the kinds of exercise I’m on about – think running, cycling and HIIT workouts.
Sure, these are really good for you and can help you lose some of that excess weight, but you will also need to do some strength training as well. That’s because cardio without strength training just isn’t that effective! One way you can get some strength training into your fitness journey is to start lifting weights.
Beginners should stick to ones like dumbbells and barbells before moving onto gym weight machines. Yoga and Pilates are also good for working on your strength and core. Once you add in plenty of strength training, you will find that you lose even more weight and your body starts to really tone up!
Set Yourself Goals
It is important that your motivation stays high throughout your fitness journey. If you ever feel it start to decrease, you’ll need to mix things up a bit to get excited about working out again! One of the best ways to ensure your motivation is always there helping you through each and every workout is to set yourself goals.
Rather than just give yourself one big target, it’s a much better idea to create smaller goals that you can achieve more often. These need to be achievable but challenging at the same time. The more goals you achieve, the fitter you will become and the more proud of yourself you can be!
There are other ways to increase your motivation as well. For instance, you might like the idea of hiring a personal trainer if you know that your motivation is particularly low. They can help inspire you right until you reach your final fitness journey goal!
Switch Things Up Regularly
Once you have been exercising regularly for a few months, it is time to change things slightly. For instance, you might want to increase the intensity of your workouts or add an extra one in during the week. This is so that your body is constantly challenged as your fitness improves. You might also find that it is beneficial to start doing a different regular exercise or gym class as well.
For example, if you have been running and doing Yoga for the past month or so, you might want to start a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) class that combines both cardio and strength exercises. This keeps things challenging for you and your body.
If you just stick to the same workouts, your body will become complacent. It needs to be continually challenged, and the best way to do that is to move it in various ways so that you engage different muscles each time you workout.
Not really enjoying the class or exercise you’ve just started? No problem – just switch to another one! You don’t have to stick with something just because you don’t like it. There are lots of different workouts out there, so you are bound to find one you love. And once you do, you will be a lot more motivated to continue with it!
Enjoy your fitness journey!
