Bird’s Nests

No, this isn’t some figurative name for a more conventional dish. These are actual, edible bird’s nests, which have been a delicacy in China for countless years.

Although they’re colloquially called swallow’s nests, these are woven by swiftlets in specially built frames, before being harvested and woven into more manageable and appealing shell shapes.

Swallows bird nest is usually served in a rich soup, which is a traditional Chinese wedding dish and can be pretty pricey in any restaurant.

Aside from being a really unique experience, these bird’s nests also do wonders for your body’s natural immunity. It’s high in glycoprotein, which is essential for your body to combat illnesses. It’s also been found to be high in epidermal growth factor, which is good for the skin.

Calf Liver

You may have read this and immediately assumed that calf liver is disgusting. Well, this time, you’re right! While it’s held as a delicacy in some cultures, almost everyone I’ve spoken to has said it’s one of the most disgusting things they’ve ever eaten.

This European dish dates back to the early 19th century, and these days it’s a pretty specialist dish which is only served in a handful of restaurants. If you can get your hands on it though, it’s one of the most nutritious things you may ever eat.

It’s a great source of protein and nutrition, not to mention loaded with vitamins A and B and a whole host of other beneficial minerals. However, this odd delicacy does have a downside; it’s pretty high in cholesterol. Still, the sheer nutrition packed into a calf liver greatly outweighs the cholesterol.

  1. Calf liver is not disgusting ! Calf liver is nice , I mean veal with calf, a baby cow 🙂 although we hardly eat liver , as veal/calf is very expensive and not always available here. And porc or old bull’s liver is dry and tough stuff. Liver and apple wedges cooked together is really nice, ooh thanks for that reminder. Looks like we’re going to have liver next week someday.
