Our health should be taken seriously. We only get one body, and one lifespan to use it. We spend our lives dreaming of visiting exotic locations, meeting our soulmate and meeting our grandchildren. But if we don’t look after our mind-body health, this could pass us by.

Google is certainly not the place to look for your medical solutions because most of the time a simple headache makes you think you’ll be dead in 2 weeks. We must learn how to take care of our body properly, our mind and our soul to stay fit and healthy for much longer and be happier.

Physical Health

Don’t Ignore The Doctor

It doesn’t matter whether you have heard horror stories about medical malpractice or don’t like having attention on you, your health is important. It is something which many people take for granted and ignore. If you ever face a persistent change in your body, such as a bad cough or a headache, which doesn’t go away after a week: visit the doctor.

You may think it’s a waste of time, but these are medical professionals, they know what they are talking about. Whether they tell you to go back and take some tablets or diagnose a more serious issue: visiting your local doctor is the best way to keep yourself fit and healthy.

A sedentary lifestyle is not good for the body; it can weaken your muscles and slow your metabolism down. Also, you won’t become toned and fit by being a couch potato. So, this weekend makes it your aim to get out of the house, walk around, play with your family or even brave the gym if you like. Any physical activity is great for the body because it gets your heart pumping, muscles growing and releases hormones through your body. It might feel horrible while you are doing it, but afterward, you’ll feel invigorated.

A Balanced Diet

You’ve probably all heard of counting calories, and apps such as MyFitnessPal make it easy to find the foods you eat and calculate how much you eat per day. However, it’s not all about quantity; the quality of the food you eat is also important. You should try and ingest a mixture of protein, carbohydrate and healthy fats each day. Protein is a great addition to your diet if you plan on being active, as its role in the body is to repair muscles and cells. You don’t have to live on just salad and chicken though, living a healthy lifestyle is about moderation. Treating yourself to a giant Pizza every so often is what moderation is about, just try not to do it every week!

Lots Of Water

It is recommended that you drink 2 liters of water each day. Water helps flush out toxins, boost your metabolism and cleanse the body. Keeping hydrated might be difficult if you don’t like water, but fruit infuser water bottles are an excellent way to get flavor into your drink.

Mental Health

Meditation

Staying healthy isn’t just about the body, it is about your mental health too. It is staggering how many of us suffer from problems such as depression and anxiety, and it is something which needs to be addressed and stop being seen as taboo.

Meditation is a way of focusing your mind and energy on one thing at a time; it takes your mind off everything aside from the steady flow of your breathing and your body. There are many meditation apps which you can use to help you meditate every day for 5-10 minutes. It can make a huge difference to stress levels and reset your mind for the day ahead.

Counselling

It is tough enough for many of us to admit we have a mental health issue in the first place, let alone ask for mind-body help. Counsellors seem to be tarred with the brush of being straight-laced, soft-spoken and incredibly boring, but that’s not the case at all. There are many types of counseling which help with different mental issues and use different methods:

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is focused on helping the patient get to the root of the issues and helping you to deal with it. They offer advice; they may set you tasks such as writing down every time anxious feelings bubble up- which you can discuss in the next session. It is an active form of therapy which aims to help you come to terms with your issues and deal with them.

PCT

Person Centred Therapy is a holistic technique which focuses more on listening to your story and getting you to figure out your own issues. Usually, the therapist will repeat back what you’ve said to get you to think about things in a different perspective. It is not a pro-active kind of therapy; it is one which allows you to solve your own issues by talking them through with a friendly face.

Systematic Desensitisation

If you have a phobia or an OCD, systematic desensitization is an active form of mind-body therapy which takes you through small stages until you face your fears head-on. For example, if you had a phobia of spiders, the steps would look something like this:

 

  • Step 1: Talk about spiders
  • Step 2: Look at a photo of a spider
  • Step 3: Watch a video of a spider
  • Step 4: Be in the same room as a spider
  • Step 5: Look at the spider
  • Step 6: Touch the spider

Usually, you will go through these steps over and over again until you have the strength to face your fear.

Keeping A Journal

If therapy isn’t for you, try keeping a journal. Diaries aren’t just for teenagers; they can be useful for adults too. Being able to document your day and write down how things make you feel allows you to feel as though you are sharing the burden, and you can look back on the entries over the months and see how well your mind-body health has progressed.
