Managing Mental Health In A Natural Way

Mental health is a minefield. From depression to psychosis, a surprising majority of us will experience a mental health issue at some point. To put it in perspective, at least 1 in 6 people worldwide have struggled with mental well-being in the past week. Though the issue is so widespread, many of us are still unsure about the best way to move forward. The problem may be less of a taboo subject now, but there’s still a lot of misunderstanding where mental illness is concerned. And, those who do seek help often worry that medication is the only option for recovery.

Medication

But, there are a few reasons why that isn’t always the case. There’s no denying that medication is the fastest solution and that it’s necessary in extreme cases. But, thinking this is the only answer can often do more damage than good. Many people don’t go to see a doctor because they don’t want to rely on pills.

Plus, this is very much a case of medication covering the problem, rather than solving it. Mental health is not an easy issue to understand, and there are often a few factors which cause problems. By taking medication, we cover things we may need to work through for recovery.

There’s also concern over a number of pills prescribed. With America often dubbed as ‘The Prozac Nation,’ the worry makes sense. Doctors seem keen to prescribe pills rather than spend time with patients. And, the pills themselves are not without their side effects. They work by altering brain chemicals, which is where most mental problems stem.

SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, stop our brains absorbing serotonin. Other antidepressants work in similar ways. If someone has been severely depressed, they may have been lacking in energy and desire. The sudden increase in serotonin can, in some cases, give them the energy to harm themselves. Other side effects include –

  • Nausea
  • Sexual problems
  • Aggression
  • Insomnia

And the list doesn’t end there. So, it makes sense that many of us are reluctant to go down this path. But, few of us know the alternatives. The good news is, there are many natural ways to manage mental health. We’re going to look at some here.

THERAPY

One of the best things you can do is find yourself a therapist. There’s no denying that this is going to cost, and waiting lists can be long. Even so, it’s often the surest way towards recovery. You get the benefit of working closely with a mental health professional. You’ll also be able to work through your problems instead of covering them over. There are a few different options available, so it’s worth researching which one would work for you.

Cognitive behavioral therapy works towards changing negative mental patterns. Something like psychotherapy uses talking to get to the root of an issue. Don’t be afraid to try out a few different methods before you find one that works for you. Sometimes, a mixture of a few methods can be the best way forward. You may also find that you don’t have a connection with the first therapist you try. Don’t be afraid to change for that reason, either. It’s important that you trust and feel comfortable with your chosen therapist. Something as simple as a personal dislike could affect progress.

MEDITATION AND YOGA

Meditation and yoga are another fantastic way to move past mental illness. Both methods work towards acceptance and finding inner peace. Meditation involves bringing your mind to the moment and blocking out distractions. If you’re meditating through mental health, shocking revelations may come to the fore.

It can help to prepare for this eventuality. Though it may be an uncomfortable road, it’s worth sticking to it. Successful meditation can take you a huge way towards living a calmer life. It’s fantastic for those who suffer from anxiety and other panic disorders. It rewires the way your brain approaches situations. In a lot of ways, the effects will be like those of cognitive behavioral therapy.

Yoga is a less introspective form of meditation and may be better for beginners. It incorporates physical exercise, which can boost feel-good chemicals in the brain. Again, yoga allows for plenty of introspection and small meditative breaks. But, it mixes these with physical activities which encourage body awareness.

SO YOU THINK YOU NEED SUPPLEMENTS?

For many of us, the idea of taking something to help with our mental health is a reassurance. But, we needn’t head straight to mental health medication for that backup. Instead, it may be worth turning your attention to the natural supplements available. You may find it helps to take brain nutrition supplements.

These use natural ingredients such as St. John’s Wort and B vitamins. They can help to improve your mood. You may also find that it helps to take omega-3 capsules, and magnesium, among others. Not giving your body what it needs could have a drastic effect on your mood. It may be worth getting a blood test to see whether you lack in anything. Then, you can take steps towards rectifying the problem. It may not solve your mental health, but it’ll go some way towards improving your mood.

FIND BETTER FOOD

Few of us realize the extent to which our diets affect our mental wellbeing. As we mentioned above, not giving your body what it needs could do real damage to your mental health and happiness. If you’re not eating enough, that could lead to reduced blood sugar and low moods.

So, make sure you’re eating regular meals. It’s also worth researching foods that boost serotonin levels. These work a lot like SSRIs do! Omega 3 fatty acids, healthy fats, and protein, all increase serotonin. And, high caffeine drinks like coffee inhibit production. It’s also important to stay hydrated. Hydration plays more of a role in mental well-being than many of us realize. If you’re not drinking enough, you may find it hard to concentrate or think straight. That’s not going to help your mood!

Managing Mental Health can be an uphill battle! There are Natural Ways to deal with it and I hope this helps.
